1 Day TO Go Before APC Finals
With only 1 day to go before the APC finals, the 18 teams who will compete for the coveted title are expected to feel the pressure. Who wouldn’t? The teams will be competing among the best students in the region.
Who will be judged as APC 2010 Champion? Will UNC be able to defend their title? Or is DWCL hungry to regain the title? All these will be answered on March 1.
APC Tips for Coaches and Participants
For its 3rd year, APC is once again posting this short write-up to give helpful tips to coaches and participants. Here it goes.
TIP 1
Practice your analytical skills. It is through this skill that you will be able to solve problems in the competition. No matter how excellent your programming skill is, if you are unable to understand what the problem is about then you cannot and will not solve anything.
TIP 2
Familiarize yourself with the FILE INPUT operations of your chosen language. This is essential because data input of problems given in APC will always be read from a file. Output shall be on the computer screen.
TIP 3
Practice compiling and interpreting in the command-line. Based on experience, even in National and International Competitions, there is no guarantee that IDEs installed in the PC assigned to your team will work 100%. In cases like this, it is still best to do things primitively.
TIP 4
Avoid using language constructs that can halt the execution of your program. Do not use system pauses, getch(), getchar(), and the likes in your program. These things will affect the execution of your program when run by the judges. Oftentimes, you will receive a “NO – Time Limit Exceeded” for judgment.
TIP 5
Make your programs simple. Avoid at all cost importing add-on packages/libraries and using advanced data structures and constructs in your program. Most problems can be solved using simple or nested loops and with fewer lines. Should you have a very long code, it means you’re doing it incorrectly.
TIP 6
Brute-force algorithms work, but not all the time. In some cases, using brute-force approach may solve a given problem especially if your data comes from the sample input in the problem. However, most of the time, it fails given different test cases. Remember, the sample in the problem set is there to give you an idea on the expected output of your program.
TIP 7
Bring reference materials that will help you in the competition. Books and printed materials are the only allowed references. Electronic media like CDs, DVDs, flash drives are not allowed during the competition.
TIP 8
Solve easiest problems first. Most often than not, you will always solve the problem printed on the first page thinking that it is the easiest. You are wrong! Try reading the problems first then sort it via its degree of difficulty. Remember, your goal should be to solve many problems, if not all, given the limited amount of time.
TIP 9
Don’t dwell on a problem for so long. You should have a time limit in solving a problem. If you are working on a problem for more than 30 minutes and have not solved it, try working on a different problem.
TIP 10
Relax and don’t be intimidated by the other teams.
Welcome, The Lewis College of Sorsogon!
The APC organizers welcome The Lewis College of Sorsogon in the competition. This will be the first time that a school from the province of Sorsogon is taking part in the event.
Special thanks to Mr. Michael Angelo D. Brogada, Dean of the College of Computer Studies, for the support!

First APC Champion Joins APC2010
The firt ever APC champion, Divine Word College of Legazpi, sends a team for this year’s tilt. Unsuccessful in defending their crown last year, will they be able to grab it this year? With last year’s contestants still in their team and having a new coach, DWCL has high hopes that they will once again reign among the schools in the region.

Thank you Engr. Martin D. Valeras, Jr. for the support!
AMA Legazpi Rejoins APC
AMA Computer College of Legazpi rejoins APC after a year of absence. The school participated in the first year of competition and was able to make it to the top 5 in the individual category. With their participation this year in the team category, it is expected that their participants will once again bring back the glory that was once theirs.

Thank you to Mr. Florante Bardon, Head of the Computer Science Department, for his support.
Welcome AMA Legazpi!
ParSU Sends Biggest Delegation in APC History
Partido State University will send 4 teams in this year’s Ateneo Programming Challenge. This will be the first time ever that a school is sending more than 2 teams. This is another first in the 3-year history of APC. Among their participants is Christian Kurt A. Valencia, who was a member of Team IT no more in last year’s competition. Will luck shine on him this time? Hopefully it will.
We would like to thank Mrs. Amelita S. Merano, Head of Information Technology Department, for her support!
